Great Question....
Hi Veronica,
That is a great question. The answer is yes. There are many forms of counseling approaches.
Narrative Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Gestalt Therapy
Motivational Interviewing
Behavior Modification  Therapy
And there are many more lesser know approaches. It depends on where you study to become a counselor, but most colleges provide at least a little exposure to each of theses approaches. The reason 12-step therapy is the focus of many training programs is because the bulk of treatment centers are 12-step based. I always encourage anyone who plans on being in the field of addiction treatment, to explore as many different approaches as possible. This way they can find an approach that they are comfortable with and that fits their style. I hope this information has been helpful for you. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of further assistance. I tried to email you but the email address you left did not work.
